Halloween is a time filled with all sorts of scary imagery, and, more often than not, that imagery includes a glorious assortment of – cats! Scaredy cat-on-a-fence silhouettes, witchy black cat familiars, spooky sugarskull kitty designs… what’s not to love? Everyone knows about the classic superstitions surrounding our beloved black cats (and oh, how I adore my all-black babies), but there are some other cats out there deserving of a Halloween mention as well. Let’s get to know some of our more unusual feline friends with a Spooky Halloween Cat Breed Countdown.

Our Spooky Cat starter is the Maine Coon. Originating in Maine (was the name a dead giveaway?), these humongous furry beasts are well-known for their enormous size and thick, long coat. Heralded as one of the biggest cat breeds in the world, Maine Coons can weigh anywhere from 10 – 25 pounds on average. Not only that, they are also often very tall, resembling miniature fuzzy lion babies! However, despite their intimidating size and gait, the Maine Coon is one of the most gentle and laid-back cat breeds. So relaxed are these gargantuan furry companions that they’ve even been referred to as the “gentle giants” of the cat world. So really, these enormous feline babybeans aren’t so scary after all – once you get to know them.

Our Iranian friend, the Persian, is one of the more well-known cat breeds, and anyone who’s seen a Persian will be the first to comment on their smushed-in little kitty mugs. It’s true – the defining feature of a Persian is their stunted muzzle and constant look of disapproval. Is there anything spookier than a cat with a perma-frown? Probably, but the Persian makes up for it by being mostly even-tempered, even lazy. Take it from someone who’s had a Persian baby of her own (who often went by the loving nickname “Fatty Fatty Boombalatty”) – Persians are super, super chill. All they want to do is bask in the sun while dreaming about basking in the sun. Don’t let the Persian cat’s expression fool you. Yes, like most cats, she’s probably judging you, but for the most part, she’s really just wondering when she’s going to get her Fancy Feast.
Ah, where would our Spooky Cat Countdown be without the infamous Sphynx? Mention a Sphynx to someone and they’ll probably be all like, “eew, aren’t those the creepy cats with no fur? They’re so weird looking, blah blah blah”. PLEBEIANS, all of them. Sphynx cats are, for the most part, just like any other cat, but naked. While the Sphynx cat’s very name evokes the visuals of ancient Egypt, this breed was actually developed in Ontario, Canada, in the 1970s. Interestingly, Sphynx cats are not entirely hairless – in fact, they have a thin coat of very fine hair all over their teeny weeny precious kitty bodies. However, due to their lack of a full coat, their owners do need to take precautions, as their nakey little selves have trouble regulating body heat. You know what that means? HALLOWEEN SWEATERS, MY FRIENDS. Kitty Halloween Couture, I love it.

Alright friends, time for my fave ever Spooky Cat Breed – the Peterbald Cat. The Peterbald hails from St. Petersburg, Russia, which is fitting, because they basically just look like Bartok the bat from the animated movie Anastasia. Is there anything that screams “Halloween” more than a spooky-looking cat that looks like a spooky-looking bat? Double spooks! Often confused for being Sphynx cats, the Peterbald is also a hairless breed, but with the added benefit of some crazy looking facial features. These precious little naked babies have giant, fennec fox-looking ears, long noses, and almond-shaped eyes. Besides being super surreal to look at, the Peterbald is also a more active and athletic breed of cat as compared to the Sphynx.

Okay guys, the moment you’ve all been waiting for – the NUMBER ONE SUPER SPOOKY CAT BREED IS: the Lykoi! You may have heard of the Lykoi cat, as they are literally the stuff of legends. Aptly dubbed “werewolf” cats, they look like exactly that – tiny baby werewolves! The very word “lykoi” means “wolves” in Greek, in fact. These precious tiny weirdos are created through a genetic mutation in the Domestic Shorthair breed, meaning they occur naturally! How neat! Interestingly, these tiny little spooky sweets have only been surfacing over the past 20 years or so, but their reputation for their bizarre appearance precedes them. Originating in Vonore, Tennessee, the Lykoi cat is characterized by a coarse, black, and sparse coat. Despite their “scary” appearance, Lykoi cats are very easygoing, affectionate, and playful, making them the perfect companions for Halloween and all year-round!
